Who is Melissa Aguilar?
Bilingual journalist
I remember being 8-years-old and running around my neighborhood in Yuma, Arizona “con las noticias”. I had such an urge at a young age to know what was happening around me. My grandmother nicknamed me “La Reportera”, and it stuck.
When my guidance counselor at Northern Arizona University asked me what I wanted to major in my freshman year, I did not hesitate, I wanted to be a news reporter. Throughout my undergrad career, I dedicated myself to gaining experience as an MMJ; I did an internship at the Arizona state Capitol and then eventually landed my first job in my hometown of Yuma, Arizona. Two and a half years later, I was working at my dream job, Telemundo Arizona in Phoenix.
My goal has always been clear, to inform, to become a staple in my community and someone that can be trusted and to tell people’s stories that otherwise wouldn’t be told. I believe as the media we have the power to positively impact our communities, we can be the voice of the voiceless. The greatest reward for me so far in my career, has been helping out people. It's that feeling of knowing I made a difference that pushes me daily and motivates me to continue this journey of being a storyteller.
I'm Melissa Aguilar and it's a pleasure getting to know you ALL.
